The department supports MD and MS residents at the National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute, and postgraduate students from public health institutions, through every stage of a research project: choosing a question, designing the study, analysing the data and writing it up.

Thesis support from the first idea to the bound copy: choosing a feasible question, writing the protocol, calculating the sample size, analysing the data and preparing the chapters and the defence.

03The thesis pathway
Six steps, one supervisor who has done them all
Most students come to us with a deadline and a half-formed question. The pathway below is how we take a thesis from there to a publishable study.

Choose a question
A topic in cardiovascular epidemiology or clinical research that is relevant, feasible in the time available, and matched to data the student can actually collect or access.

Design the study
Cross-sectional, cohort, case-control or trial. Sampling, sample size, the questionnaire or data collection form, and the ethics application.

Collect the data
Training data collectors, supervising fieldwork, and setting up checks so that what comes back is complete and clean.

Analyse it
Descriptive and inferential statistics, regression models and survival analysis in SPSS, Stata or R, with a written analysis plan agreed beforehand.

Write it up
Chapter by chapter review of the thesis, and preparation for submission and presentation.

Publish
Turning the thesis into a manuscript, choosing a journal, and responding to reviewers.

Learn the methods, or bring us the data
Research methodology and biostatistics
A training course for MD and MS students of the National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh, run by the department: study design, sampling, questionnaire construction, data management and the statistics a thesis needs, taught with the software the students will use. Shorter sessions introduce SPSS to students and doctors who need to analyse their own data.
Course dates are announced on the notice board above. Write to the department to ask about the next intake.
Statistical consultation
For researchers who already have a protocol or a dataset, the department's statisticians offer:
- Sample size calculation
- Randomisation and allocation concealment
- Statistical analysis plans
- Analysis in SPSS, Stata and R
- Data cleaning and management
- Survival analysis (Kaplan-Meier, Cox regression)
- Systematic review and meta-analysis guidance
